Steps To Become A Pilot
1. Discovery Flight
Your instructor will take you on a short flight to introduce you to the airplane, the airport, and the thrill of taking the controls of a safe, reliable Cessna airplane for the first time.
2. Start your Flight Training
With Northway’s Cessna Ground School kit, you will use our interactive programs designed to compliment your actual flight experience.
3. Get your Aviation Medical Certificate
A brief exam is required to obtain your student pilot certificate and third class medical. If you are under 40 years of age this will last for 5 years, over 40 and it will be good for 2 years.
4. Study, Practice, Learn
Your ground training courses will compliment flight training with your instructor. For each ground lesson you complete you will conduct a flight lesson and get you closer to the first milestone of solo flight.
5. Make your First Solo Flight
Once you have reached a point where you and your instructor feel you are ready, you will take to the air by yourself. This is an enormous achievement that very few people have ever accomplished and a day you will never forget.
6. Fine Tune Your Skills
Fly as much as possible to gain experience and build upon everything you learned prior to your first solo flight, both with an instructor and on your own.
7. Take your Exams
When you have passed the knowledge test you will take the Practical Test, also known as a checkride. This is conducted by an FAA designated examiner and consists of an oral and flight exam. That’s it, you will be handed a temporary pilot license immediately and can now enjoy the freedom of flight!
8. Keep Flying!
Once you get your pilot certificate, get as much experience as possible, get involved, and stay connected. Most importantly, keep flying!

Years of Experience. Northway Aviation has been training pilots for well over a decade, and many of our students have stayed with us as instructors. Owned by Jim Grant since 1998, the company has added new airplanes to the flightline and kept pace with the latest technology.
More than just flight training. We offer FBO services to transient pilots, with free access to wifi, a flight planning room with three aviation weather computers, a comfortable pilot lounge, and free coffee for all who visit!
Northway Aviation is committed to teaching the highest quality flight training while providing a fun and safe atmosphere. Our training requirements exceed FAA requirements to ensure the pilots we train remain safe and follow regulations when they are on their own.
Not all students learn in the same manner. Some students are hands on learners and some are book learners. We cater to all learning styles and will work with you on a one on one basis. All of our instructors are very knowledgeable so it’s generally a personality fit when pairing a student with an instructor.
